Built in the 12th century and dedicated to Saint Saviour, this beautiful cathedral has been a place of worship for centuries.
The exterior façade features an impressive array of sculptures depicting biblical scenes and figures from Christian mythology. The entrance is framed by two towers that reach up to 40 meters high, making it one of the tallest cathedrals in Provence. Inside are several chapels adorned with frescoes and stained-glass windows, which add to its grandeur.
Saint Sauveur was built on top of an ancient Roman temple dedicated to Apollo, which can be seen through some parts of the building’s foundation walls as well as its crypts. This makes it a unique blend between ancient Roman and medieval styles – something you won’t find anywhere else.
One highlight within Saint Sauveur is its organ; originally built in 1650 by François Thierry, it has since been restored multiple times but still retains much of its original charm. It’s considered one of the most important organs in France due to its size (it contains over 4500 pipes.) And sound quality – perfect for any classical music fanatics out there.
