Dating back to the 16th century, it has been an important part of Colmar’s history for centuries. The square was named after Johann Rapp, a wealthy merchant who lived in Colmar during the 1500s. He wanted to create something special that would be enjoyed by all citizens, so he funded the construction of this beautiful public space.
The main feature of Rapp Square is its magnificent fountain, which serves as both an aesthetic centrepiece and a functional water source for local residents. This impressive fountain was designed by renowned sculptor Jean-Baptiste Schmitz and features three tiers with four figures on each side representing different tradesmen from Colmar’s past such as merchants, farmers, carpenters and more. It also includes two large stone lions at either end guarding over it all – truly making it a sight to behold.
