Kennedy Memorial in Dallas, Texas, is a fitting tribute to the 35th President of the United States and his legacy. Located in Dealey Plaza, just blocks away from where he was assassinated on November 22nd, 1963, this memorial serves as a reminder of one of America’s most beloved presidents.
Designed by architect Philip Johnson in 1970, it stands as an open-air cenotaph made up of four large concrete cubes arranged into a square with their corners slightly raised and angled towards each other. The structure has no roof or walls, but instead features two inscriptions: “John Fitzgerald Kennedy 1917-1963” engraved on its east side and “Let us continue” inscribed on its west side – both serving as reminders of JFK’s life and legacy.
The monument also includes several bronze plaques that feature quotes from some of JFK’s speeches, including “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country” which highlights his call to public service during his presidency. Additionally, visitors will find three metal sculptures that are meant to represent peace rising out from the darkness below – further emphasizing President Kennedy’s desire for global peace during his lifetime.
Since its dedication ceremony in 1970 attended by LBJ (President Lyndon B Johnson), Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis (wife), Robert F Kennedy (brother), Ted Kennedy (brother) and Lady Bird Johnson (wife), thousands have visited this site every year to pay their respects to John F Kennedy who is remembered fondly even today more than five decades after his death.
