Located on the banks of the Rhine River, it has been an iconic feature of Düsseldorf since its completion in 1891.
The fountain was designed by Karl Schinkel, one of Germany’s most renowned architects. It consists of two bronze wheels with jets that spray water into a basin below them. The wheels are connected to each other and rotate around a central pillar which stands at 10 meters tall, making it one of the tallest fountains in Europe. The entire structure is made from cast iron and measures 8 meters wide, making it an impressive sight to behold.
The design was inspired by ancient Greek mythology; according to legend, Zeus used his chariot wheel as part of his weapon against Typhon during their legendary battle for supremacy over Olympus. This symbolism can be seen in Cartwheel Fountain’s design as well – two large bronze wheels symbolizing Zeus’ chariot wheel rotating around a central pillar representing Mount Olympus itself.
Cartwheel Fountain has become an important symbol for Düsseldorf over time – not only because it represents its rich cultural heritage but also due to its unique architecture and aesthetic beauty which makes it stand out among other landmarks in the city. Throughout history, many famous figures have visited this site, including Napoleon Bonaparte who famously declared “This is indeed beautiful.” after seeing Cartwheel Fountain for himself back in 1807 when he visited Düsseldorf during his conquest across Europe. In recent years, Cartwheel Fountain has become even more popular thanks to social media platforms such as Instagram, where visitors often post pictures taken at this amazing spot.
