Located on Place de la Major, this beautiful building was built in 1884 by architect Charles Garnier. It stands as a testament to the city’s rich past, with its impressive façade featuring intricate sculptures and carvings depicting famous figures from French history such as Louis XIV and Napoleon Bonaparte.
Inside, visitors will find an array of stunning architectural features including grand staircases, marble floors, stained-glass windows and ornate ceilings. The main hall is particularly impressive; decorated with frescoes that depict scenes from everyday life in Marseille during the 19th century. There are also numerous statues throughout the building which represent important figures from local history such as Admiral Pierre André de Suffren who fought against British forces during the American Revolutionary War.
The City Hall also houses several important government offices, including those for public safety, education, and culture. It is also home to many cultural events throughout the year such as concerts, theatrical performances and art exhibitions which take place in its large auditorium or courtyard space outside.
