Alter Hof

The site was once the residence of Bavarian dukes and kings from 1320 to 1508, when it was destroyed by fire. After being rebuilt a few times over the centuries, Alter Hof became one of Munich’s most important sites for government and court activities during the 19th century.

Today, visitors can explore this amazing piece of history by taking a guided tour or simply wandering through its picturesque courtyards and gardens. It is also home to several museums, including Museum Brandhorst which features modern artworks from artists such as Picasso and Matisse; Neue Pinakothek which houses old master paintings; and Staatliche Antikensammlungen which exhibits Greek artifacts dating back to antiquity.

In addition to its historical significance, Alter Hof offers plenty of other attractions for tourists to enjoy, such as shopping on Maximilianstrasse with its many designer stores or visiting Marienplatz—the main square in Munich—for some traditional Bavarian food like sausages and pretzels. Visitors can also take part in cultural events such as concerts at Odeonsplatz or catch a show at Gärtnerplatztheater nearby.

No visit would be complete without exploring Alter Hof’s beautiful grounds where you will find lush green lawns surrounded by grand buildings adorned with baroque architecture along with flower beds filled with colourful blooms throughout springtime until early autumn months making it perfect for photos ops.
