This iconic fountain has been a part of Parisian life for centuries, with its roots dating back to the 17th century, when it was built as part of an elaborate garden design by André Le Nôtre. The fountain features three majestic palm trees that are surrounded by four bronze basins filled with cascading water.
Today, this beautiful fountain stands proudly at Place de la Concorde, just steps away from the Champs-Élysées and other popular tourist attractions such as the Louvre Museum and Notre Dame Cathedral. It is one of the most photographed sites in all of Paris due to its grandeur and beauty.
The original design for this magnificent piece was commissioned by King Louis XIV who wanted to create something special for his beloved wife Marie Antoinette; thus, he asked Le Nôtre to build a lavish garden featuring exotic plants like palms trees which were rarely seen in France at that time. After completing his work on Versailles Palace’s gardens, Le Nôtre returned to Paris where he created what we now know as the Palm Tree Fountain – an impressive structure made up of four bronze basins arranged around three tall palm trees which are decorated with intricate carvings and sculptures depicting various scenes from Greek mythology including Apollo’s chariot being pulled by horses and Cupid shooting arrows into hearts.
