Petite France district

Located in the heart of the city, this charming area has been preserved as an architectural gem since the 16th century.

The name “Petite France” comes from its former use as a tannery quarter, where tanners processed animal hides into leather products. The district was also home to many fishermen who worked on the nearby Ill River, which runs through Strasbourg. This mix of trades gave Petite France its unique character and atmosphere that still exists today.

Visitors will be enchanted by Petite France’s cobblestone streets lined with half-timbered houses dating back to the Middle Ages. These buildings have been carefully restored over time and now form part of an eclectic array of boutiques, restaurants, and galleries that are popular among locals and tourists alike. Strolling around this picturesque neighbourhood is like taking a step back in time – visitors can almost imagine what life was like centuries ago when artisans crafted their wares here or fishermen unloaded their catch at one of the many quayside markets along the riverfront.

For those interested in exploring more of Strasbourg’s cultural heritage, there are several monuments worth visiting within walking distance from Petite France including La Petite Venise (Little Venice), Place Gutenberg Square and Notre Dame Cathedral – all located just steps away from each other. Other attractions include museums such as Musée Alsacien which showcases traditional Alsatian costumes as well as artefacts from World War II; Parc de l’Orangerie public park; Palais Rohan palace; Ponts Couverts bridge complex; Maison Kammerzell house; Trompe l’Oeil mural paintings…the list goes on.
